How Temporary Insurance Works for Imported Cars

Bringing an imported car into the UK can be difficult. There are forms to file, tests to book, and paperwork to chase – and somewhere in the middle of all that, you still need to drive the car legally. That’s where temporary insurance comes in.

Temporary insurance for imported cars is short-term cover that protects your vehicle for a specific period, typically between one day and 90 days. It bridges the gap between your car’s arrival in the UK and its permanent registration and long-term policy.

When Do You Need Temporary Cover?

The most common situations for temporary car insurance include:

  • Driving an import during the DVLA registration process – Before your car has UK plates, standard insurers cannot quote. Insurers can arrange cover using your chassis number or VIN in the meantime.
  • Moving an unregistered vehicle – Whether transporting to a garage, IVA test centre, or storage facility.
  • Test drives before purchase – If you’re buying an import and want to drive it briefly before committing to a full policy.
  • Covering a recently deregistered car – If the vehicle’s existing insurance has lapsed and you need short-term protection while sorting a new policy.

Temporary Insurance for Non-UK Residents

If you’re visiting the UK from abroad and bringing your car, you may need temporary cover for the duration of your stay. Your existing home country policy might only provide minimum third-party protection in the UK, so it’s worth checking with your current insurer before you travel. Short-term policies for non-UK residents typically run from one day up to 28 days and are designed for this kind of short visit rather than a permanent import situation.

How Does Temporary Import Car Insurance Work?

Once you take out a policy, the vehicle is insured for the exact period you’ve selected. That could be seven days, 30 days, or anywhere up to 90 days, depending on the insurer. There’s no cancellation needed when it ends. The policy simply expires on the agreed date.

At minimum, every policy must include third-party liability cover – that’s the legal requirement for driving on UK roads. However, some policies offer additional cover options. For example:

  • Comprehensive cover (protects your vehicle against accidental damage, not just third-party claims)
  • Fire and theft protection
  • Breakdown assistance
  • Legal expenses cover

For imported vehicles specifically, insurers can arrange cover against a chassis number or VIN. This matters a great deal. Without UK plates, standard insurers will simply decline. A specialist who understands imports will use your vehicle identification number to set up cover until registration is complete. Once your V5C arrives and UK plates are assigned, you move across to a long-term policy.

How to Get Temporary Insurance for an Imported Car

The process is fairly straightforward if you have the right documents ready. You can typically arrange cover online or over the phone through a dedicated broker or insurer.

Documents you’ll usually need:

  • Your driving licence (UK or international)
  • Proof of identity
  • The vehicle’s chassis number or VIN
  • Import documentation, such as the export certificate from the country of origin
  • Your NOVA reference number (if already completed with HMRC)
  • MOT or IVA certificate, if the vehicle has already been tested

Some insurers may also ask for proof of any modifications, particularly with performance imports. Having everything ready in advance speeds things up.

How Much Does Temporary Import Car Insurance Cost?

Costs vary quite a bit depending on the vehicle and driver. There’s no single figure that applies across the board, but here’s a rough guide to what to expect.

Factors that influence the price:

  • Vehicle type and value – High-performance Japanese imports or rare American models carry higher premiums.
  • Driver age and experience – Younger or less experienced drivers pay more.
  • Duration of cover – Longer periods cost more overall, though daily rates often reduce slightly.
  • Level of cover chosen – Comprehensive cover costs more than third-party only.
  • Modifications – Any performance or cosmetic changes will push prices up.
  • Parts availability – Vehicles with harder-to-source parts are more expensive to insure.

Grey imports – vehicles brought in from outside the EU, such as Japanese domestic market cars – typically sit at the higher end due to parts costs and repair complexity. Parallel imports from within the EU tend to fall closer to standard car insurance prices.

Moving to Full Import Car Insurance

Temporary cover is a practical short-term fix. But once your car is registered and on UK plates, you’ll want a long-term policy that properly reflects its true value and requirements.

Standard insurers often won’t cover imported vehicles adequately – or at all. Import car insurance accounts for the unique nature of your vehicle, whether that’s a JDM sports car, an American muscle car, or a classic European model brought over through parallel import channels.

At Advance Insurance, we’ve been helping owners of imported vehicles find the right cover for over 90 years. We work with insurers who genuinely understand what these cars are worth and what it takes to repair them. Our team can also arrange cover using your chassis number before UK plates are assigned.
